A Birthday Prayer

A Birthday Prayer for a Little Girl

Today, in a land far away, a beautiful little girl we’ll call Lisette turns 3 years old. I haven’t met Lisette, but I’ve seen her lovely, delicate face and fallen in love. I couldn’t let today end without sharing my prayer for her birthday today and next year.

For today, I pray she is content. Happy seems a far too elusive goal for a tiny girl in an orphanage. I pray today she has someone smile at her, hold her close before changing her diapers, perhaps even bestow a kiss on the birthday girl. I pray she is lovingly fed, not shovel-fed by a harried worker. I pray she is safe, that those who might mistreat her are kept at bay, and not just on her birthday.

Most of all I pray Lisette would find a family today. Actually, I wish a family would find her. I pray they would see how precious she is, how lovely she is, how valuable she is. I pray that they would instantly feel an urgency to get to work to adopt her. I pray they would start craving information about her birth country, because that’s where their daughter lives. I pray that God would put His divine hand on their backs and push them through worries and doubts until they recognize that they don’t want to live any more days than necessary without her.

Which brings me to my prayer for Lisette’s birthday next year: I pray she is surrounded by parents, siblings, balloons, cake, ice cream, grandparents (the spoiling kind!) and love that she can drink in until she is overflowing. One of my favorite lines from the Stephen Curtis Chapman song “All I Want” is this:

All I really want for Christmas
Is someone who’ll be there
To sing me Happy Birthday
For the next 100 years

That really sums up my birthday prayer for Lisette; I want this to be her last birthday alone and next year to be the first of many birthdays safe in the bosom of a family of her own. I pray she'll never spend another birthday alone.

Amen.

Happy Birthday Lisette!
